MEMORIES

Rob Gretton wanted to set up a Manchester concert for Joy Division around the time of the LP's [Unknown Pleasures] release, but without the rest of the Factory tour package. To him it was obvious that people were coming primarily to see his group, so there was no need for endless support bands. When he ran into Nigel Bagley, who was booking The Factory, he proposed that Joy Division headline the club, with only one support, Crispy Ambulance, a local band Gretton knew and was much involved with at the time. This concert marks the point when Joy Division not only ceased to be simply the best-known of the Factory bands and reasserted their independence, but also moved to within a hair's-breadth of establishing their position as the most popular of Manchester's independent group. The Fall, who had held that honour for some time (excluding, of course, Buzzcocks and Magazine), played The Factory the night before and drew only ten or twenty more than Joy Division's 444 attendance
