MEMORIES

We had other singers from Factory bands do most of the set then we'd do the instrumentals and then Ian would come on and do Heart and soul and two slow ones (Decades and The eternal). The idea was we played all the fast ones with the lads and he'd come on at the end. He really wanted to do it. So, when Ian went off a full scale riot ensued. One of our roadies was badly bottled, and it was all going off and Ian saw this, thought it was his fault and just crumbled. We took him back to hospital and it was a really incredibly stupid thing to do. Our intentions were good, cheer him up, make him forget about it all. Ironically it was these kids Rob met outside who said they were big fans but didn't have any money. So he let them in free, they started it all, real meatheads

Confusion reigned supreme during Joy Division's set at Bury, and the following is a rough reconstruction based on interviews with members of the audience. The Minny Pops opened, and were followed by Section 25. When it was time for Joy Division to go on stage, Ian was too ill to perform so the group jammed with Section 25 for a while, with everyone rotating instruments as the jam progressed. Section 25 went off stage and Joy Division began playing their songs, with Alan Hempsall, of Crispy Ambulance (renowned for his Ian Curtis impersonations), and Simon Topping, of A Certain Ratio, standing in for Ian. By the time of The eternal, Ian was well enough to sing but could not continue after Passover. Joy Division returned to jamming, but some skinheads in the audience had lost all patience and one threw a beer mug at Simon Topping and missed. A melee followed, with Rob diving off the mixing desk into a group a skinheads. Terry defended the stage and equipment with a microphone stand, but Twinny, the Joy Division roadie, was smashed in the back of the head with a pint glass and had to be taken to the hospital. Rob was also pretty banged up. Peter was kept in the dressing room and out of the battle by the combination of the persuasion of Tony Wilson and his wife, Leslie, and by Paul, of Section 25, holding him down
